Hell is Other People: The Conflict Between Architecture and Residents

Jean Paul Sartre's Home

FOREWORD

Firstof all, it should be clear here that we are discussing the conflict between thespatial power of the architect and the inhabitant anddesigning a house with Sartre as a client, not to fully confirm Sartre'sstatement that the other is hell.

WHAT IS SPATIAL POWER

Inshort, as long as one person has the ability to monitor and correct anotherperson, then such a power space is formed.

"Individualnorming" is derived from the "surveillance principle", whichmeans that individual behavior is continuously checked and regulated byisolating and designating individuals. (It can be compared to the process oflearning by repeatedly instilling unintelligible knowledge)

Powerspace as an abstract space, the simplest example is the process of teachersinculcating knowledge to students. Through repeated inculcation and errorcorrection of knowledge, students finally achieve the mastery of knowledge.

Howcan such abstract power space be transformed into concrete space, or how canconcrete space serve this power space? When we talk about power space inarchitecture, we are focusing on the relationship between people.

WhyBurr Puzzle?

Basedon the research above, I believe that the relationship between spirit and fleshis in conflict, as is the relationship between architecture and humanness. EvenSartre, an existentialist philosopher, is not immune to this, perpetually amida struggle between the notion of philosophical freedom and inhabiting the realworld. I have studied many assembled modules and sculptures based on thesequalities, such as the Rubik's Cube, the 3d puzzle, and the LubanLock(Burr Puzzle).

Sofar, I consider the Burr puzzle the ideal model that best embodies myconception. As Burr puzzle's overall shape will reference the conflict betweenthe flesh and soul, even if they can be perfectly combined, but withouttutorials and skills, few people can put them together thoroughly. Thisinability to restore seamlessly will result in a great deal of erosion andabrasion in the gaps, implying the constant conflict between body and spirit, architecture and residence.

Photographeach step of the burr puzzle assembly ( the first row), and decompose thepositive and negative space, then deconstruct the negative space in the centerpart ( the second row). If the rectangular area in the first step is thebasement or parking, keep the void region of the puzzle in the top left andchange it to an indoor garden surrounded by glass extending to the living roomon the first floor. Then gradually, according to the splicing step and spacefunction, divide the living room on the second floor, the kitchen, the bedroomon the third floor and the private resting space on the fourth floor.
