The design concept is evolved through weekly development, while the sole focus is human-centered innovation in design. In the precedent research phase, I am drawn by architectures from SANAA formed by Ryue Nishizawa and Kazuyo Sejima, the proposition does not make a project complicated, architecture is no more the center of the theme, but lets the object content became dominated, which concentrated on people. To study how individuals' interactions – activities, relationships, events, conflict, friction, encounter, and content. Buildings contain these features turned neutrality stance.
In this project, I wanted to balance the new building and the old community through a neutral space that is not intrusive and a linear activity that connects the whole design. In the first phase, the buildings were scattered on the site, ignoring Toronto's climate problems in the pursuit of absolute mobility. Too diffuse and open design can reduce participation in the winter. In the second version, some functions were integrated, such as combining the performance space with the gallery to ensure the utilization of the space. However, this integration compromises the balance of the design volume. Therefore, in Operation 2, the concept of ambiguous space was introduced to remove spatial boundaries while adding walls. Using nesting, blurring the relationship between inside and outside of the space, ensuring the activity and participation of the space while observing the fluidity.
The community center is divided into two types of Spaces, restricted Spaces and open Spaces serving different functions. For example, in meeting rooms, studios and other areas with high requirements for privacy and sound insulation, doors, and blocks will be used more frequently. But the design of the cafe, art gallery, and library will be more fluid, with the side view of the voluntary movement of people. As a multifunctional space closer to the natural environment, the atrium provides an indoor playground and performance space for children.
The use of materials is influenced by the local architecture, with the addition of red brick to evoke a sense of familiarity and intimacy, the addition of wood as a symbol of the local vernacular, while concrete and glass to balance the transition between the interior and exterior spaces. The outdoor park employs the implied design concept while softening the architectural boundaries. Buildings and people's impact on the environment are neutral, naturally, dispersed like ripples of water and influencing their surroundings.
